More than 20 schools across the nation have been impacted by gun violence since the start of 2024, with a Georgia high school becoming the latest K-12 campus to contend with firearm related deaths and injuries.
Four people were killed and nine others were injured after a school shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, an Atlanta suburb, on Wednesday morning, which was the 23rd time this year this year a school shooting has resulted in injuries or deaths, according to data compiled by Education Week, a news organization that covers K-12 education.
Education Week is just one of multiple organizations that compiles data about gun violence in schools, but unlike the National Gun Violence Archive or K-12 School Shooting Database, they only track incidents that fulfill a certain criteria:
- Reported incidents where a firearm was discharged
- Where any individual, other than the suspect or perpetrator, has a bullet wound resulting from the incident
- Occurred on K-12 school property or on a school bus
- Occurred while school is in session or during a school-sponsored event
With those factors in mind, 2023 had 38 school shootings - 15 more than in 2024 so far, including the Georgia shooting Wednesday.
There have been approximately 205 school shootings since Education Week began to track school shootings in 2018.
