For Meagan Good, her newest film was especially personal.
After all, when the 42-year-old portrayed Ava in Divorce in the Black—a character whose marriage falls apart—while her relationship with now ex-husband DeVon Franklin came to an end after almost 10 years of marriage.
It’s one of the ways she was able to relate to her character’s journey.
“A big part of the journey was discovering that when it feels like your life is ending, sometimes it’s really just beginning,” she told E! News’ Francesca Amiker of the lessons she learned while making the film. “And there’s a blessing even in what feels like one of the worst moments of your life.”
She continued, “And then trusting that process, about your perception and your attitude and how you approach it and your mentality. And so that’s something I think I could relate to the most.”
At the end of December 2021, Meagan and DeVon first announced they were parting ways.
"After much prayer and consideration, we have decided to go into our futures separately but forever connected," they said in a statement to E! News at the time. "We celebrate almost a decade of marriage together and a love that is eternal. There's no one at fault, we believe this is the next best chapter in the evolution of our love."
And in the time since finalizing their divorce in 2022, Meagan—who is currently dating Jonathan Majors—has learned to embrace the next step in her journey while reconnecting with who she is.
"I've learned a lot about myself," she shared during a January 2023 appearance on The View. "I've rediscovered myself in a lot of ways."
"I think in this season I'm really excited about what's next," she continued. "I'm like, 'All right, Lord, if you allowed it, okay, what's next, Dad?' It's exciting for me low-key. I feel like I get to start my life over in some ways and have a second chance at whatever's supposed to be next."
But on what exactly that second chance might include, the Harlem star has previously revealed some of her aspirations for the future.
“I want to travel, I wanna direct more, I want to do more action," she exclusively told E! News in August 2022. "I wanna create vehicles for little Black girls to show themselves a completely different light and help support that and uplift that."
So don’t miss seeing Meagan in Divorce in the Black, available on Prime Video beginning July 11.
